2017 has been a good year for the moviegoers. It had its mishaps, downfalls and fails of course, but all in all, it brought some great films in the theaters. From horror and drama to romance and comedy, almost every genre had a hit we could enjoy. The movie studios also profited with these movies cashing in quite a lot of money. You could say it was a win-win situation for everyone. In case you didn’t have the time to catch all the best 2017 had to offer, we decided to do some digging and bring you our picks for the best movies of 2017. During our research, we consulted the lists from Vox, Esquire, Rolling Stone, New Yorker and other influential media and then check all the movies for their IMDb rating. The ones that have received the biggest score from the audience found their way onto our list. Let’s check it out.

30. Wonder Woman

This fourth installment in the DC Extended Universe follows Gal Gadot who stars as Diana Prince or Wonder Woman. The crash of American pilot on the island of Amazons reveals that there is an ongoing World War, so Diana leaves her home in order to end the conflict. Wonder Woman ended up as the tenth highest grossing movie of 2017.

29. Spider-Man Homecoming

This is one of the many superhero movies based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man we had an opportunity to see in the last 15 years. This time, Tom Holland stars as Spider-Man and tries to balance his high school life as Peter Parker and his superhero life, all the while being chased and confronted by a villain named Vulture. It is the second most successful Spider-Man movies and fifth highest grossing movie of 2017.

28. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: Episode VIII, as it is also known, is eight main installment of the Star Wars franchise. The story follows Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, the main weapon in the fight against the First Order, as she receives Jedi training from Luke Skywalker. This is the highest grossing movie of 2017, yet for some, it failed to deliver on the hype. Star Wars fans enjoy it nonetheless, so it is a must see if you are into it.

27. It

It may not be everybody’s favorite, but the IMDb rating suggests that it has a lot of fans, so it had to come to our list. It is a movie based on Stephen King’s bestseller and follows a group of kids who band together to take down a shapeshifting monster, who hunts down children by taking the appearance of a harmless clown with balloons.

26. 120 BPM (Beats Per Minute)

A French drama film about homosexuality and AIDS, set in the 1990s. It won four awards at Cannes Film Festival and was also nominated for 13 César Awards, including Best Film. The story was developed on personal experiences of screenwriter Philippe Mangeot, hence why it may leave a deeper mark on some.

25. Gifted

The story follows a 7-year-old Mary Adler, who has been blessed with an enormous intellectual gift, but becomes subject of a custody battle between her uncle Frank, starring Chris Evans, and her grandmother Evelyn. One of better dramas in 2017.

24. The Big Sick

Cultural differences have always been part of our daily lives and this romantic comedy tries to portray it through humor. The story follows Kumail Nanjiani starring as himself, as he deals with the illness of his girlfriend Emily, played by Zoe Kazan, while their families oppose their relationship. The movie was nominated for Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and is one of the highest-grossing independent movies of 2017.

23. Molly’s Game

Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut, Molly’s Game, follows the story of an underground „crime boss“, Molly Bloom, played by Jessica Chastain, as she becomes wanted by FBI for running a poker empire for all celebrities in Hollywood, including the Russian mob. An excellent crime drama based on true events, it received two nominations at 75th Golden Globe Awards.

22. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2

Superhero movies seem to have infested 2017 and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is one of them. Praised for its visuals and cast, it also received some critics about being washed up and not fresh as the original. Nonetheless, it is the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2017 and the excellent cast will surely keep you entertained while Guardians travel throughout cosmos and help Peter Quill learn more about his parentage.

21. Baby Driver

No, this movie isn’t about driving babies! It starts Ansel Elgort as Baby, a music lover who is coerced to work as a getaway driver for a kingpin played by Kevin Spacey. A good action movie that will keep your attention all the way to the end.

20. Get Out

A debut movie of Jordan Peele, it got much more recognition and fame that it ever hoped. In fact, it deserves a place as one of the better horror movies and not only of 2017. The story follows a young African-American and his white girlfriend as they head to meet her parents for the weekend in a secluded estate. The friendly and polite ambiance seems to be too perfect to be true, and it is not long before the calm and joyful atmosphere gives way to a nightmare and gore.

19. I, Tonya

I, Tonya follows Tonya, a competitive ice skater as she rises the ranks of U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Her future, however, becomes questionable and in doubt when her ex-husband appears back in her life.

18. On Body and Soul

Foreign movies were on the rise this year with this one coming from Hungary. It stars Géza Morcsányi and Alexandra Borbély as Endre and Mária, two slaughterhouse workers sharing same dreams. When they decide to make their dreams come true, they find out it is much harder in real life. The movie was nominated for Oscar at 90th Academy Awards.

17. Wind River

Taylor Sheridan brings us a shocking story of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service tracker Cory Lambert and a rookie FBI special agent Jane Banner, as they investigate a death of 18-year-old Natalie in Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. The story is based on somewhat true events and director tried to point to sexual assaults of women in these reservations. This emotionally packed movie is a definitive must see.

16. The Disaster Artist

Starring James and Dave Franco, the story follows Greg Sestero as he works his way up the Hollywood. One day in acting class, he meets Tommy Wiseau, who is… weird to say the least. The two form a unique friendship and embark on a journey to make their dreams become a reality.

15. The Florida Project

National Board of Review and American Film Institute chose this movie as one of the top 10 in 2017. It follows a six-year-old girl and her rebellious mother, trying to make a living and stay out of trouble in a motel in Greater Orlando.

14. Lady Bird

This comedy-drama movie, directed by Greta Gerwig, follows a 17-year-old high school senior in Sacramento and is faced with growing up, as well as the turbulent relationship with her mother. The movie was praised for its originality and got Gerwig an Academy Award for Best Director nomination.

13. The Shape of Water

Guillermo del Toro is a well-known name in the horror and fantasy movies. After Pan’s Labyrinth, many critics declared The Shape of Water as his best film. The story is set in the 1960s and follows a lonely janitor who becomes bonded with an amphibian creature held captive in a secret facility. It received a leading 13 nominations and won Best Director at 75th Golden Globe Awards. Del Toro continues to rack up awards and bring masterpieces to the theaters.

12. Loveless

A Russian drama directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, Loveless follows two parents separated both physically and emotionally, with a loveless relationship and connected only by their son. When he is suddenly gone missing, they are brought together in an attempt to find him.

11. Loving Vincent

This one is an interesting, out of ordinary movie that had to be on this list. It is the world’s first fully painted movie and follows a young man in the last hometown of painter Vincent van Gogh. He is on a mission to deliver artist’s final letter but ends up investigating circumstances of his death.

10. Thor: Ragnarok

We last saw Thor after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron when he left to go to visit his world of Asgard, only to find out it is about to explode! To make the trouble bigger, his brother Loki has taken over Asgard and gets Thor imprisoned. The only way for him to escape captivity and save his home is to win a deadly gladiatorial contest and defeating his former ally, The Incredible Hulk. And all this without his hammer!

9. The Greatest Showman

This is the story of the man who raised from nothing and built an empire in the entertainment. P. T. Barnum was famous for his thirst for innovation and success that brought him to build a worldwide sensation on the circus stage. But his obsessions will make him lose the sight of the important thing in his life: his family.

8. Logan

When Hugh Jackman announced that he will do his last appearance as Wolverine, Marvel fans were expecting a lot from him, and we can say that he succeeded. In the near future, the most mutant population is extinct and Logan is taking care of the ailing old Professor X. One day they meet a girl named Laura, soon they find out that she is in many ways similar to Wolverine. They try to protect her while she is pursued by a powerful corporation, who wants to discover what’s the connection between her and Logan’s DNA.

7. Dunkirk

One of the most anticipated movies in 2017, Dunkirk brings us a fact-based story about Allied soldiers from Belgium, The British Empire and France and their evacuation from the French city of Dunkirk, while being attacked by the German army during the battle in World War II. This historical masterpiece is directed by Christopher Nolan, bringing him two nominations for the upcoming Academy Awards.

6. Paddington 2

Our favorite talking bear is back with a new adventure. He decides to find a job so he could buy a book for his beloved Aunt Lucy. But the book gets stolen from Mr. Gruber’s antique shop. Paddington and the Browns decide to unmask the thief and stop the strange events that are happening in their city. This is a heartwarming movie, perfect for the whole family.

5. Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2049 is a sequel to 1982 original, and stars Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. The story is set thirty years after the first movie and follows K, a blade runner who uncovers a secret that could lead to a huge and devastating war. This secret leads him to a quest to find Deckard, blade runner from the original movie who’s been missing for thirty years.

4. Phantom Thread

A love story set in the London’s couture world in the 1950s. A renowned dressmaker, Reynolds Woodcock lives a life of a true womanizer. One day, he comes across a strong-willed woman, Alma, who becomes his lover and muse. But trouble begins when he understands that he is torn between love and the life he once had.

3. Call Me by Your Name

This melancholy drama based on the novel by André Aciman is set in the summer of 1983 in North Italy. Elio is a seventeen-year-old boy, whose parents favored him with the fruits of high culture. Elio is sophisticated and intelligent, but he is still just a simple boy. He spends the summer flirting with his friend Marzia until one day arrives Oliver, a charming American scholar working on his doctorate. That’s where Elio discovers the beauty of true love and desire.

2. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

A touching story about the mother who decides to take the justice in her hands. After the local authorities don’t find the murderer of her daughter. She paints three billboards with controversial messages directed to the town’s chief. This bold move provokes a series of events that heat the already tense situation in the town.

1. Coco

This Disney family movie tells the story about the importance of the family. A twelve-year-old boy, Miguel, is confronted with his family when he decides to follow his dream of becoming a musician. One day he ends up in the Land of the Death, where he discovers that his great-great-grandfather is a legendary singer, and that’s where his adventure starts.
